ANNOUNCEMENT 192 - 243 QUESTIONS - SC51
ITEM: RTA000026658
QUESTION:
In light of the September 22 announcements, I have the following
questions.
1) Announcement 192-243 indicates that the Internal/External SCSI-2
adapter is only available in the model 5XX. Since all 5XX's
(except the 580) ship with an Internal/External SCSI-1 adapter,
will there be a Select Option to get the SCSI-2 adapter instead
of SCSI-1?
2) The same announcement says that all SCSI files will attach to both
SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 adapters and that all SCSI files will perform at
peek transfer rates of 4MB/sec regardless of adapter.
I am confused by this statement. I understand that the peek trans-
fer rate of a SCSI-1 adapter is 4MB/sec and that it is 10MB/sec on
SCSI-2.
a) Is this saying that even on the SCSI-2 adapter the new 1GB
portable drive (which quotes a transfer rate of 5MB/sec) will
only perform up to 4MB/sec?
b) Now, if your answer to the above question is NO (which I am
hoping, i.e. that this is a typo and that it will in fact
perform up to 5MB/sec on a SCSI-2 adapter), then if I mix
some of the older SCSI files and the 1GB portable on a SCSI-2
adapter, will I now only get up to 4MB/sec (even on the 1GB)?
c) Or were they trying to say the following?
All SCSI files will perform up to a peek transfer rate of 4MB/sec on
the SCSI-1 adapter and all SCSI files will perform up to a peek trans-
fer rate of 10MB/sec on the SCSI-2 adapter (although we know that
there is no such SCSI file that operates at 10MB/sec).
3) The bottom line is, by mixing SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 devices on a SCSI-2
adapter, do I get diminished performance of the SCSI-2 devices be-
cause they are in a mixed chain?
4) Will the new 7209 Optical Disk Drive read our current INFOExplorer
CD-ROMs?
5) With the new Optical Drive, can a customer do a MKSYSB backup to it?
6) And finally.......Fastpath for the Model 220 (announcement 192-251),
this seems to imply that it is only available with the 6091-16"
monitor. Is that true?
7) Also, on the Fastpath, it implies that the system must be preloaded.
Is that true - preload only? No Powerload (software customization)?
And if it truly is preload only and not Powerload, who can I complain
to?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: I will answer your questions in order:
1) Will there be a Select Option to get the SCSI-2 adapter
instead of the SCSI-1?
We do not have any information on IBMs future plans in
this area.
2) Performance of SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 devices on SCSI-1 and
SCSI-2 controllers.
SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 devices are interchangeable. This means
that SCSI-1 devices, SCSI-2 devices, or both can be
attached to either SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 controllers.
You should note that when SCSI-1 devices are controlling the
bus, bus performance will reflect SCSI-1 speeds. When a SCSI-2
device controls the bus, the bus will reflect SCSI-2 speeds
(assuming we are talking about a SCSI-2 bus).
3) Do I get diminished performance of the SCSI-2 devices because
they are in a mixed chain?
No, for the reasons stated above.
Questions 4 & 5 will require further research.
6) What monitors are available with the model 220?
Using the Fastpath ordering option only the 6091 monitor is
available. This is because the system ordered through
Fastpath has predetermined components so that the order
may be delivered in 5 working days.
7) Does the model 220 come preloaded only?
Again, using the Fastpath option, the model 220 only comes
one way. This is to facilitate the fast delivery.
If you want to order a 220 in another configuration, it will
have to be ordered through the traditional route.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Question 4: No it will not.
Question 5: No, the 7209 is not currently supported as a bootable
device so mksysb is not possible.
