I have some questions concerning VRAM and the GT1 Graphics Adapter for
the RS/6000 Model 220. Specifically I would like to know how to
figure out how much VRAM memory (upgrade kits) are in a GT1 adapter on
a 220. I have read item BQWFL. I now understand how to see how many
upgrade kits are installed on a GT1 adapter. Could you expand on this
and tell me how to figure out the size of each of the upgrade kits
installed? Are there only 512-k kits or are there 1-MB kits also?
If so, how do I figure out the total amount of memory (not just kits)?

A: The "Setup and Operator Guide" for the 7011 (Model 220) shows on
about page 2-34 that the VRAM sizes are 256 kilobytes, 768
Kilobytes, and 1.3 megabytes. So, each upgrade adds 512 kilobytes
of VRAM.

A: If you wish to see how much memory is on the Gt1 graphics adapter,
you can use the command, 'smit lsattr'. You will then need to choose
"Show Characteristics of a Defined Device" and then select the entry
"sga0" (the definition name of the Gt1 graphics adapter). There is
a field, "Fairness and Nibble mode enable mask" which will tell you
the number of VRAM simms on the Gt1. The valid numbers are:
2 - 1 bit per pixel (no upgrade kits installed)
6 - 4 bits per pixel (one upgrade installed)
10 - 8 bits per pixel (two upgrades install)
You can also see how many VRAM simms that the Gt1 has via ODM. You
would type 'odme CuAt' and choose "Retrieve/Edit" and then search for
the entry "sga0". The field to the right of the first sga0 entry says
"curr_nbr_sims" and the field to the right of this field corresponds
to the number of VRAM simms on the Gt1.
