My customer currently connects to several locations via X.25. He is
looking into alternative connectivity to his remote sites, and he
posed questions about frame relay connectivity. He wants to be able
to configure asyncronous terminals from a local host to remote
locations over frame relay for the smaller locations. He also wants
to connect from a local RS to remote RS(s) via TCP/IP over frame
relay for future telnet and ftp sessions. What type of hardware
options do we offer on the RS/6000 platform to allow these types of
connections? What type of software, OS implementation, or applications
are needed to make this idea work? Thanks.

A: Here is a diagram of the RISC/6000 Frame relay connection options,
without using a mainframe host.

He could easily attach terminals to the 7318 terminal servers at
his remote sites. It is unfortunate that we do not make a
frame relay adapter for placing directly into the RISC, this
would eliminate the need for the bridge/routers. But at present,
you need a local network at each end as well as bridge to the
frame relay network.
Therefore, to answer next question: yes, you can connect two RISC/
6000's to a Frame Relay network if you use a router such as the 6611
or an OS/2 machine with the RouteXpander/2 product installed. The
RISC/6000 requirements are TCP/IP protocols in AIX. For exact 6611
router requirements send a note to MKT6611 at RALVM12.
