QUESTION:
My customer needs a way to be able to review events that occured for
the week. Our event log currently lasts about 2 hours before it wraps
and then we loose all the events. As a result we can't even review
what went wrong the night before.
Q1:
Can the size of the event log be increased? It currently wraps at 500
events and there is no way to have someone there to save them each time.
Q2:
Also, when I do save the log it only gives me the option to use one file
name. Each time that same file is overwritten. Can this be changed?
Q3:
How can I automate the backup of the event log so we have a valid
sequence of events?b
Q4:
How can I view these events once they have been backed up?

A: I will answer your questions in the order asked:
A1:
Yes, the event log size can be increased, but only to 2 megabytes.
This can be accomplished by performing the following from the
root menu:
Monitor > Events > Event History
From the control desk:
Operations > Set event log size.
However, If you are receiving more than 500 events every 2 hours,
you might want to implement some filtering to reduce the number
of events logged.
Also, you may wish to use the /usr/OV/log/trapgend.log to view
past events. This is an text-based log of all traps received.
This log does not wrap.
A2:
I was not able to reproduce this problem on version 2 or 3.
I don't know of any reason that you would not be able to
specify a different filename.
A3:
In order to automate the backup of the event log, you could
setup cron entries to copy the /usr/OV/log/ovevent.log to
some other name on an hourly basis. To view the old logs,
you would have to copy them back to /usr/OV/log/ovevent.log.
Instead of doing this, I would suggest that you just view the
/usr/OV/log/trapgend.log.
A4:
You would need to copy these back to /usr/OV/log/ovevent.log
in order to view them.
