NFS FILE LOCKING.
ITEM: RTA000038025
QUESTION:
Is mandatory file locking supported with AIX NFS (Network Lock Manager)?
Specifically, will files that appear locked from one workstation (Sun)
appear to be locked from an RS/6000 and vice versa.
Also, the RS/6000 should honor the level of locking on the Sun workstati
and vice versa.
ONC's Network Lock Manager apparently has this functionality, do we?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Unfortunately, AIX NFS does not support mandatory file locking. It
only supports the lockf() and fcntl(), System V style of advisory
file locking which implements record level locking as opposed to
merely file level locking.
If the Sun systems are using advisory locking, then the AIX programs
will recognize the file lock. However, they will not recognize
mandatory locks.
Also, AIX NFS will honor the level of locking on the Sun since AIX NFS
uses the standard UNIX implementation of record level locking.
