RISCSYSTEM: CAN I CONNECT AN RS6000 WITH A BMX
ITEM: RTA000031084
QUESTION:
I would like to know if the Block Multiplexor Channel Adapter (BMX)
on the RS6000 can be directly connected to a 3088. I understand that
it emulates a 3088, but it is not clear whether it can be directly
connected to a 3088.

A: According to Development, the BMX adapter cannot be connected
to a 3088. Communication via the BMX adapter is only thru
direct attachment to a parallel S370 channel.
Here is how the BMX works. The RS/6000 with the BMX installed
attaches directly to the mainframe channel and to the mainframe
it looks like a 3088. In the mainframe generation you generate
it as a 3088. The BMX can also attach to a mainframe thru a
3044 or an ESCON converter. When directly attached you are
limited to a distance from the mainframe of 400 feet. When
setting up the mainframe generation you do not specify any 3088
model. The BMX can run in both CLAW mode and NON-CLAW mode. If
you want to run in CLAW mode then thru SMIT you define it on the
RS/6000 and also in TCP/IP on the mainframe you define CLAW mode.
As far as documentation there is a manual called Block
Multiplexer Channel Adapter User's Guide and Service Information
(SC23-2427-01) that explains the various options.
