HOW TO CONNECT IBM PS/2 TO RISC 6000 ON NETWARE
ITEM: RTA000023203
We are planning to buy an IBM Risc6000 model 530 on our TRN. We are
using Netware 3.11 on our File Server. We have 50 ps/2 on this TRN.
I have the following questions:
(1) Can users use their PS/2 as a terminal to connect to Risc6000?
What kind of software has to be loaded in their ps/2?
(2) Can workstations attach and recognize Risc6000 and NetWare at
the same time? If can, what kind of software and hardware do we
need in either Risc6000 or Netware 3.11 file server and how to
set up?

A: There are two ways to integrate a RISC Ssystem/6000 into a Netware
LAN.
1) You can add the RISC to the LAN using TCP/IP for communicating
between the PS/2s and the RISC. This requires AIX TCP/IP on the RISC
(included with AIX Version 3 and 3.2) and a DOS TCP/IP product, of
which there are several available from IBM and other vendors.
This will allow PS/2 users to use their terminal to communicate with
the RISC, giving them terminal emulation and file transfer
capability. Other facilities may be available depending on the DOS
TCP/IP product you choose.
The TCP/IP solution will not allow PS/2 users to communicate with the
Netware server and the RISC simultaneously due to conflicting
protocols used in the different products- Netware utilizes IPX
packets for communications, while TCP/IP uses IP packets. The PS/2
users would have to reconfigure their communications adapter in
order to switch between the Netware server and the RISC. This
normally requires rebooting the PS/2.
2) The second solution is to use the newly announced Netware for
AIX/6000 from IBM V3.11 (5696-236) on the RISC. This product allows
RISC workstations to act as server for Netware LANs. It provides
file and print sharing among DOS, Windows 3.x, and OS/2 NetWare
clients, and AIX/6000 Version 3.2 users, as well as network
connectivity. NetWare for AIX/6000 from IBM v3.11 combines the
function of NetWare LAN server with the RISC System/6000 hardware and
UNIX operating system.
NetWare for AIX/6000 from IBM V3.11 combines NetWare server functions
with the general purpose, AIX/6000 operating system, bringing
functions of UNIX to the PC user.
NetWare for AIX/6000 from IBM is compatible with other implementations
of NetWare, such as NetWare from IBM V3.11 or NetWare from IBM V2.2.
Existing Netware clients need no additional hardware, software, or
training to access these resources of the RISC System/6000.
