SYSTEM MONITOR/6000 VERSION 1 VERSUS
ITEM: RTA000048903
QUESTION:
I am trying to understand the recently announced System Monitor/6000
Version 2. One of my customers made the decision to purchase 60
RS/6000's as follows: two RS/6000's in their corporate headquarters
and one RS/6000 in each of their 58 retail stores. We proposed to
manage this network with Netview/6000 Version 2 and System Monitor
Version 1. Netview/6000 Version 2 was to be installed on a corporate
network management system RS/6000 and Systems Monitor/6000 was to
be installed on RS/6000's in the retail stores. In this
configuration, we could establish thresholds, etc. and
Systems Monitor/6000 would notify Netview/6000 when appropriate.
Netview/6000 would not have to constantly poll the remote sites.
Now, with Netview/6000 Version 3 and Systems Monitor/6000 Version
2 just being announced, I want to propose the correct software.
My questions are as follows:
1. Does each remote site require Systems Monitor/6000 Mid-Level
Manager in order to offload the Netview/6000 management machine
or is installing the Systems Information Agent on each remote
RS/6000 sufficient?
I am trying to duplicate the function of having Systems Monitor/6000
Version 1 on every machine. I would greatly appreciate your
comments˘ THANKS

A: The Mid Level Manager is a new feature which was added with
Systems Monitor/6000 Version 2. The Mid Level Manager provides
the distributed management functions and therefore would be
installed on one workstation per branch, domain, or LAN segment.
Below I appended excerpts from HONE SALESMAN article number 5765-410
which address new capabilities, provided by Mid Level Manager feature
with Systems Monitor/6000 Version 2.

Systems Monitor for AIX Version 2 is more closely aligned with
NetView for AIX Version 3. Now when NetView for AIX discovers
a Mid Level Manager in the network, it will automatically assign
the Mid Level Manager responsibility for managing and monitoring
the segment on which the Mid Level Manager is located. In addition,
more management functions including discovery and status checking
can be offloaded from NetView for AIX Version 3 to the Mid Level
Manager. The discovery function has been added to the Mid Level
Manager to allow it to discover the local subnet. This eliminates
the need for the NetView for AIX platform to poll across a wide
area network (WAN) and also allows new nodes to be discovered
faster. Status checking is also added to the distributed functions
that it performs. With these enhancements, more function is
offloaded from the network management platform into the network
to reduce network traffic, operator workload and the amount of
processing that must be accomplished by the platform.
...
The Mid Level Manager can act as an intermediate SNMP manager
allowing you to distribute the systems and network management
tasks into the network, thus freeing up your network management
platform to manage large, more complicated networks.

Reference the above article for an additional information on Systems
Monitor/6000 Version 2.
Addressing your question:
you need to have
1. Systems Information Agent installed on each monitored machine,
2. Mid Level Manager on at least one machine per LAN segment.
3. Top-Level Manager on the machine that watches overall network
activity. In this case that will be your Netview/6000 machine.
Thank you.
