IS IT POSSIBLE TO BOOT FROM DIFFERENT PARTITIONS
ITEM: RTA000051135
QUESTION:
I know it's possible to boot from different disks, using the
bootlist -m command. In fact, there was a HOW-TO item that
stated how on the same machine you could have AIX 3.1 on one
disk and 3.2 on another, and boot off either.
My customer is asking whether it's "possible to boot from
different partitions of the same disk drive? It would be
much more efficient if partition-by-partition booting were possible."
I've never heard of this, but apparenly this is possible on other
vendors boxes. I looked at the bootlist command, and the target
says "device" but doesn't state whether it has to be a disk
device or whether we could target a filesystem instead.
Thanks,

A:
Unfortunately it is not possible to boot from more than one boot image on
the same hard disk. The bootlist command determines the list of boot
devices available to the system and supports only boot device candidates
from the specific or generic devices listed below:
Specific devices: Generic devices:
----------------- ----------------
fdxx fd
hdiskxx rcdisk badisk
cdxx cd
rmtxx rmt
entxx ent
tokxx tok
Thank you.
