WHY ARE THE FORTRAN (5765-018) MANUALS NOT INCLUDED IN InfoExplorer CD-ROM
ITEM: RTA000041423
QUESTION:
Why aren't the Fortran V2 manuals included in the InfoExplorer CD-ROM
(SC23-2163)? I assume that the only way to use the Fortran infoexplorer
databases is to install them on disk. Please explain how a customer
uses the CD-ROM for the majority of the manuals and the disk for
Fortran?

A: There are several versions of the InfoExplorer CDROM (SC23-2163).
The current version is SC23-2163-10. I was able to find copies of
the following versions of the InfoExplorer CDROM:
SC23-2163-00
" " -03
" " -04
" " -07
" " -08
" " -09
" " -10
All of these included the XL Fortran database in the /fortran
directory.
When you start InfoExplorer with the 'info' command, it does
not automatically access the XL Fortran databases. This is
because there is no entry in the /usr/lpp/info/data/ispaths
file for XL Fortran. There are two ways to gain access
to the XL Fortran databases.
1) Start InfoExplorer using the command 'info -l compilers'.
This tells InfoExplorer to look for its ispaths file in
the /usr/lpp/info/data/compilers directory. This directory
contains a ispaths file that contains an entry for the
Fortran database. When I started InfoExplorer using this command,
it started up a window with the C++ reference. I was able to
do a search on 'xlf' to access the information I needed on Fortran.
Please note: I performed this on an AIX 3.2.5 system. I was not
able to determine whether the compilers directory exists on earlier
releases of AIX.
2) Add a Fortran entry to the default ispaths file: /usr/lpp/info
/data/ispaths. Look at this file for the proper format. You
can copy the Fortran entry from the compilers/ispaths file if
you change the id number to be unique. This will give you
access to the Fortran database when you start InfoExplorer
with the 'info' command. One note: when I did this, the
Fortran books did not show up under "List of Books". However,
I was able to access the Fortran information by using the
InfoExplorer search facility.
Additionally, please note that the -09 version of the CDROM has
been found to be defective. To access the Fortran databases from
the -09 version of the CDROM you must issue the command
"info -l compilers -t content"
This is fixed in the -10 version of the CDROM.
To access InfoExplorer databases that are on both disk and
cdrom, you simply specify the path to the databases in the
ispaths file. This is discussed in HONE ASKQ item BJQJP.
