QUESTION:
Please advise how to customize a bitmap in the root window menu.
In the Intermediate AIX class that I took more than a year ago,
I was taught to edit .mwmrc file and add the following statement
to the bottom of root menu:
@/usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xdt_i_large/conductor.px f.exec "aixterm
I tried this the other day on 3.2.3, and it did not work. Has the
syntax been modified in the latest X release?

The syntax for the .mwmrc file has never changed, what has changed
is the format of the conductor.px file.
Using the '@' sign in your .mwmrc file allows the user to display
a bitmap (and only a bitmap) from one of his/her mouse menus.
Although the files in the /usr/lpp/X11/include/X11/bitmaps/xdt_*_*
all have a px (pixmap) suffix, only the latest version of AIX (V3.2)
has actually stored the files as pixmaps, they formerly were
stored as bitmaps. This is why on previous versions of AIX a user
was able to display the .../xdt_*_*/*.px files by using the '@'
sign from the .mwmrc file. This is no longer the case.
As I have stated, you cannot display *.px files to your motif menus
by using the '@' include directive, but it is possible to convert
the conductor.px file to a bitmap file. This is the method I used:
(1) Enter X-Desktop by issuing the command 'xdt3'.
(2) Select the POWER cabinet icon.
(3) Select the ICON_EDITOR icon.
(4) Enter the File menu.
Select Open.
Enter /usr/lpp/X11/include/.../conductor.px at the
Selecton field.
(5) Enter the Options menu from the main Pixmap Editor window.
Highlight the 'Output as Bitmap' option.
(6) From the File menu issue the 'Save As' command.
(7) Enter a pathname for where you want the bitmap file stored.
(8) Include this pathname into your .mwmrc file (using the same
syntax you used before).
(9) Restart Mwm.
The conductor will now be displayed in your root menu.
