Hello,
I have a question about setting subnet mask.
My customer has two AIX systems. One system uses AIX V4.2.0, and the
other one uses AIX V4.3.1.
My customer wants to set en0 with the following values;
Machine A (AIX V4.2.0) Machine B (AIX V4.3.1)
ipadress=192.168.1.12 ipaddress=192.168.3.12
subnetmask=255.255.0.0 subnetmask=255.255.0.0
The above two machines are located same network.
When I heard that , I was very supprised.
Because I think the settings are invalid.
The above ipaddresses belong to class C. So, subnet mask is effective
only when it is set 255.255.255.0.And these machine can not communicate
togher.
When my customer tried to set the above subnet mask, however there were
no messages, he could not. He only could do 255.255.255.0.
I thought that was make sense.
However, he could do on AIX V4.3.1˘˘˘˘ I was very surprised˘
So, I want to know whether it is bug or not.
If not, the specification is changed?

Q:
A:
Using a Class B subnet mask on a Class C IP address is supported on
AIX 4.2.1 and later. This is why it works on AIX 4.3.1(machine B)
and not on AIX 4.2.0(machine A).

Thank you for your answer.
May I ask question again?
I want to know;
1. Are there any PTFs for AIX V4.2.0 to set Class B subnet?
If not, do I have to update from V4.2.0 to V4.2.1?
2. If you know , would you tell me why setting subnet class B is valid
on class C network after AIX V4.2.1?

Your additional question has been received.
Q:
A:
1. Unfortunately, there are no PTFs for AIX 4.2.0 that will allow you
to use a class B subnet mask on a class C address. I cannot make a
recommendation as to whether you should upgrade to AIX 4.2.1.
2. For clarification, using a class B subnet mask on a class C address
is supported by AIX 4.2.1 and higher. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you
specifically why this is valid at AIX 4.2.1 and higher. It was just a
feature that was added. If you would like to know specifically why this
feature was added to AIX 4.2.1 and higher, then you may wish to submit
an RPQ so that Development may know of your need for this information.
Thank you for using AIX Technical Support Services.
