volumes located in the same position on the disks as the original

A: The logical volumes are created when the /usr/lpp/bosinst/bosrvg
program is run during the install process. This program executes the
"mklv" command to create the logical volumes for the root volume
group. As hard-coded in this program, the logical volumes are located
in the following regions of the disk, and created in the order shown:
hd6 (paging): middle
hd5 (boot): edge
hd7 (dump): edge
hd8 (fslog): center
all others as defined in .fs.size file: center
The order of the files in the .fs.size file defines the order that
they will be created. Since an attempt is made to place all files in
the center of the disk, only those that are created first will be
placed in the correct position. The others will be shifted to the
nearest free partitions, which may exist in the middle regions of the
disk instead.
The disk is divided into regions as follows:
outer edge / middle / center / middle / inner edge O inner edge /...

There is no way currently to define which edges or middles (inner
or outer) are to be used, but the logical volumes are currently
created in the center and gradually grow into the inner middle and
inner edges. These allocation policies may change however at any time.
If you wish to change the install script to customize the placement
of the logical volumes, you may change the order of the logical
volumes in the .fs.size file or modify the /usr/lpp/bosinst/bosrvg
program. After doing so, you can simply re-create your bootable
diskettes or tape and use those to re-install.
