DB2/6000 COBOL
ITEM: RTA000051874
QUESTION:
Customer is looking at installing DB2/6000 and they also have
Oracle installed.
Their question is can DB2/6000 use the same COBOL pre-processor
as Oracle? Or do we require different ones.
Also, I know that DB2/6000 V1 only supports Micro Focus COBOL.
Does that mean Micro Focus supply the COBOL pre-processor?
I believe we will have our own COBOL for V2, will that require
a different pre-processor?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, the pre-processor is supplied by Micro Focus.
The Micro Focus interface will continue to be available on
DB2/6000 Version 2. However, you will be able to use
the new IBM COBOL for Version 2 as well, with its own pre-processor.

QUESTION:
Is that a different pre-processor than Oracle?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: The COBOL pre-compiler from ORACLE will not work with DB2/6000. IBM
is getting back into the languages business with the new IBM COBOL pre-
compiler for DB2, Version 2 because there are platforms that Micro Focus
COBOL will not support; however, IBM will have support for DB2/6000. The
very best strategy is to use the Mirco Focus COBOL pre-compiler/compiler
which are merged. If you use the IBM COBOL pre-compiler for Version 2
of DB2/6000, then you can use any COBOL compiler.
