DB2 SDK/DOS, TCP/IP, WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS, AND NETWARE REQUESTER
ITEM: RTA000051406
QUESTION:
The client that needs access to DB2/6000 is running Windows for
Workgroups, Netware Requester, and PC/3270 over Microsoft's TCP/IP.
They use the PC/3270 to get to an MVS host.
Now the clients need to access DB2/6000 via TCP/IP. IBM's TCP/IP for
DOS will not work with Windows for workgroups and netware requester.
We have a copy of Novix C/S V2.0 and are trying to use it to get to
the DB2/6000. We are able to load everything on the client, connect
to DB2/6000, and invoke windows. But when we try to run any application
we run out of memory.
Is this the right solution for what we are trying to do?
Do we have to load all the TSRs (DB2NTCP, NVLWN, etc.) or can we
use the windows DLL (WINSOCK?)?
The clients have to use SDK/DOS to get to DB2/6000. So we have to have
a solution over TCP/IP that lets the client also run Windows for
Workgroups, netware requester, and PC/3270.
By the way, IBM support told us that Windows for Workgroups and
netware requester would not work with IBM's TCP/IP and that we should
use Windows TCP/IP (which is unsupported by Microsoft and IBM).

A: Toronto developement has been testing these issues but has
yet to incorporate them into documentation:
1. The Windows environment does not need the DOS TSRs.
When running Windows programs you could unload the TSRs
and free up memory. The TSRs are needed when using the
DOS command line processor. So anytime you needed to
BIND or CATALOG... you would have to reload the TSR.
2. When using the Firefox for Novix environment you will
either need to load the NVLWN TSR or you can get a
.DLL from Firefox. With this method you load the DLL
in windows and update the Firefox.ini configuration file
to reference it according to Firefox documentation.
3. Toronto development is still testing the ability to use
Windows for Workgroups, but indicate it is working rather well:
Go into "Network Setup",
"Add Unlisted Protocol"
and choose either 16 bit stack or 32 bit Wolverine
Then "Advanced Setup/Configuration"
and enter IP address and related info.
The configuration for TCP/IP is as normal except that
the "\services" "\resolv" and "\hosts" files are in
the Windows directory structures.
