PC X.25 CONNECTIVITY
ITEM: RTA000048945
QUESTION:
Customer would like to rollout an application using an x.25 network.
They would like to have a number of PC talk to an RS/6000 over a
public x.25 network. They require a tcpip protocol for the middleware
that they would like to use. I know the the RS/6000 can communicate
with TCPIP over x.25 but am unfamiliar with the PC products.
I know the PC artic card provides x.25 connectivity but could not
find software that supports x.25 tcpip connectivity. Is this
possible ? If so then what is required ?
gw
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, the PC Artic card will carry TCP/IP through
the x.25 cloud. Both the IBM DOS and OS/2 versions
support x.25. And connection to the RS/6000 is
definetly possible. If you have more questions, please

QUESTION:
My customer would like to write an application using DB2/CAE DOS
product or Powerbuilder. Can these products communicate over
the X.25 network with an artic atapter to the RS/6000 DB2 (which would
also have an artic adapter).
I know that this works over a traditional Token Ring LAN. Can this
type of communications work with a PC with an Artic card and TCPIP
for DOS and DOS/CAE to the RS/6000 with DB2.
gw
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: This scenario would definetly work. Consult the OS/2
TCP/IP Installation Guide for more information.
(SC31-6075).
The RS/6000 would run the DB2, and the TCP/IP will have
no problem going through x.25 to get to it (especially
with the PC Artic card).

QUESTION:
Your response directs me to OS/2 manuals yet my question is for DOS.
Will this work with DOS/Windows ?
The DOS TCPIP product makes no mention of X.25 networking.
What type of connection is supported ? i.e. SLIP, others ?
Sorry to keep opening the item but the announcements for the artic
and TCPIP for DOS to not discuss this type on environment.
gw
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: I am sorry for the confusion. OS/2's version supports X.25 as
it is. For IBM's TCP/IP for DOS, the only known adapter at this
time is OST's PC XNET (ISA). There are third-party packages
that work with our stack to perform x.25 compatiblity. You can
call 1-800-IBM-CALL to see if IBM works with third-party vendors
to offer support for this function.

QUESTION:
Please clarify 'the only known adapter at this time is ost's PC XNET'.
1. Does this mean that this is a supported adapter for TCPIP for DOS ?
2. What type of connection is supported over the x.25 network ? is
this slip ?
3. If so then is DB2/CAE supported over this (SLIP) connection
to an RS/6000 with DB2/6000 ?
gw
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: First of all, yes, this card will support TCP/IP for DOS via the
x.25 connection. There might be other products out there that have
come out recently that will work with our stack. You may also
SLIP (Serial Line IP) with the RS/6000 if you wish. Both the DOS
and OS/2 versions support this function. X.25 is not using SLIP
to carry the TCP/IP packets, that why the special adapter is used.
X.25 will encapsulate the packets on its own.
I hope this helps¢ Thanks for using ASKQ¢

QUESTION:
Is DB2/CAE supported over an x.25 connection between the RS/6000
and a PC with DOS TCPIP with an OST XNET adapter ?
gw
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Let me transfer this item to the DB2 group for further comment.
Thanks.

A: Question from product area:
CSYS TCPIP DOS TCP/IP V2R1 PCTCPIP DOSTCPIP CSYSPCIP
being transferred to product area:
IX RISCSYSTEM SOFTWARE DB2/6000 RISCDB2
This transfer may delay the answer, but you need
do nothing further until your answer is available.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: The RS/6000 suppports X.25 through OSI, SNA and TCP/IP. The RS/6000
doesn't care about the physical aspects of the TCP/IP connection. Thus,
it should work.
Thank you.
