Mount remote filesystem, permission denied

TCPIP TCP/IP FOR AIX RISC
I have a client with three rs/6000's in one ethernet-segment.
He has an F40, a 370 and a 250. He uses nfs to backup the 370 and the
250 filesystems to the tapeunit connected to the f40.
He uses, and has always used, a mount of the filesystems he wants to
backup.
On the f40 the mount of the filesystem from the 370 gives an error.
"Permission denied"
When he tried to mount the filesystem on the 250 everything was okay.
The f40 is at aix 4.2 bos.net.cfg.client is at 4.2.1.0
The 370 is at aix 4.1
The 250 is at aix 4.1 bos.net.cfg.client is at 4.1.4.0
The exportfs command shows all the right parameters. Pinging, telnet
etc works fine between the three. He has tried the mount with the alias
and with the IP-address with the same result.
Please advise.

Q:
A:
The following text are some of the likely causes for the "Permission
Denied" error.
Causes
------
1. The file system was not exported.
fix: Type (on the server) 'showmount -e ' to make sure
that the file system has been exported.
2. The server may not be able to resolve the client's IP address.
fix: Check the /etc/hosts file, and if applicable, the DNS config files.
3. The client does not have permission to mount the file system.
fix: Type 'showmount -e' to see who has permission to
mount the file system. If the machine(the 370) is not shown as one
of the machines that has permission to mount the file system then you
can add the machine to the list of machines that can mount the file
system by doing the following steps.
Steps
-----
A. Type 'smitty chnfsexp'
B. Press the PF4 key to bring up a list of the exported file
systems.
C. Choose the exported file system that you want the machine
to have access to.
D. In the "HOSTS & NETGROUPS allowed client access" field you
can give the machine access to the file system in two ways.
1. Leave the brackets empty. This means that any machine
can mount the exported file system.
2. You can add the name of the machine to the list, separating
the name of each machine by a comma. The following is an
example on how to add a machine called Reveille to a list
that already includes a machine called Aggie.
EX: ˘aggie.austin.ibm.com, reveille.austin.ibm.com˘
4. When something is changed in the exports list, in the mounts, or
somewhere else, unexpectedly, mountd becomes confused.
fix: Type(on the server) 'stopsrc -s mountd' to stop mountd. Then type
'startsrc -s mountd' to restart it.

The following text has explanations and fixes for the likely reasons
why the 370 machine is unable to mount the file system.
Causes

been exported by the host.
2. The server is unable to resolve the IP address of the client.

config files.
3. The client does not have permission to mount the file system.
fix: Type 'showmount -e ' to see who have permission
to mount the file system. If the client machine's name is not
in the list of machines that have permission to mount the file
system, then you can do the following steps to add the client
machine to the list..
Steps

A. Type 'smitty chnfsexp'.
B. Press the PF4 key to bring up a list of exported file systems.
C. Choose the file system that you want the client to be able to

D. The name of the client should be added to the "HOSTS & NETGROUPS
allowed client access" field in two ways.
1. Leave the brackets empty. This give all client machines
permission to mount the file system.
2. Add the name of the machine to the list, separating the
machines by commas. The following is an example of adding
a client machine called "Reveille" to the list that already
contains the client machine "Aggie".
EX: ˘aggie.austin.ibm.com, reveille.austin.ibm.com˘
4. When something is changed in the exports list, in the mounts, or
somewhere else unexpectedly, mountd becomes confused.
