THE BOOT PROCESS FOR XSTATIONS
ITEM: RTA000022587
QUESTION:
Can you provide me with the steps the Xstation uses in booting - i.e.
a flow of what actually is going on during the boot process.
---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ----------
A: The XStation Boot Process
-------------------------
IF Xstation network configuration (F12) has "Disable Bootp" set to YES
THEN XStation directly retrieves binaries from
Host machine;
XStation runs the binary;
XStation connects to the Host's x_st_mgrd;
x_st_mgrd.cf file is executed which starts
aixterm with login process;
ELSE XStation sends out bootp request in form of
ARP broadcast (This request is first
sent out to the last machine the XStation
booted from; if that machine does
not respond then the XStation sends the
ARP broadcast out to the rest of the
network.);
All servers on the network which have
x_st_mgr.obj installed will have their
inetd waiting on bootp sockets;
Each server that receives the boot request
from the XStation will start up their
bootpd which will examine their
/etc/bootptab file to see if this is
an XStation that they should host;
IF (This is not a valid XStation in the
/etc/bootptab file)
THEN The RISC System/6000 does nothing;
ELSE The RISC System/6000 host responds
to ARP broadcast;
TFTP process starts to download the
files (bootfile, x11xor.out, etc.);
The XStation executes the binary;
The XStation connects to
x_st_mgrd on the server;
x_st_mgrd.cf file is executed which
starts aixterm with the login
process;
ENDIF /* This is not a valid XStation ...) */
ENDIF /* Hardware configuration has "Disable ... */
