PROBLEMS USING THE RISC/6000 AS A VT100 TO A DEC SYSTEM RUNNING ULTRIX

ITEM: RTA000017822

QUESTION:

We are trying to communicate from a RISC/6000 to a DEC system running
ULTRIX. We have tried over both a dial-up port and an Ethernet* link
and are having trouble with the keyboard mapping. The cursor movement
keys do not work properly among other problems. We have used the ATE
functions and can establish the link but the keyboard does not work
as a VT100 keyboard. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also is there
any documentation anyplace on how to set up VT100 emulation in this
type of environment. We have also tried to do a Telnet as a VT100 to
the host and we are seeing a response from the host that says we are
a tty dumb device. In short we can establish the connection but cannot
talk in an intelligible manner. Obviously we do not understand the
procedures to implement the VT100 emulation. Is there any documentation
in a cookbook type approach that will help us out.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: You can set up VT100 in ATE by using one of the following methods:

    1. Change the VT100 parameter in the ate.def file to "1". This
method permanently sets the terminal emulation for ATE to VT100.
    2. From the ATE menu, select "m" for modify, and then type "v" to
change the VT100 parameter to ON. This method provides a
       temporary modification only.

For more information on setting up ATE, please refer to
Communications Concepts and Procedures (SC23-2203-00), chapter 2.

What command did you use to telnet as a VT100 to the host?
When telnetting over Ethernet, you can use the command "tn -e vt100"
to telnet as a VT100 terminal. More information on this command
can be found in InfoExplorer under the "telnet" command.

If you are telnetting from X-Windows, open a window using the
"aixterm -v" command (also documented in InfoExplorer). Any telnets
from this window will emulate a VT100 terminal.
