XONDOS, AADU, PCLP AND WHAT FUNCTIONS DO I GET? CAN I COEXIST ON A LAN WITH THESE PRODUCTS?
ITEM: RTA000018038
QUESTION:
With XONDOS and AADU, Do I now have better capabilities on token
ring lans?
We have an rs/6000 we want to connect to a token ring lan. We want some
users to use X-windows software to run SAS, be able to use the rs/6000
disk and printers, and to be able to also share data with other pc's
on the network. What software do I need and what are my limitations?
Can I coexist with the pclan programs(anno says yes) and what are
the drawbacks?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: The basic additions to XONDOS and AADU offer better features for
operating under DOS. However, AADU and XONDOS do offer coexistence
with PC LAN, OEM TCP/IP, and FTP's PC/TCP. So, while most of the
enhanced features of XONDOS and AADU are for making them run better
locally on the DOS machine, they do offer a small enhancement to
the Token Ring LAN.
I am not familiar with the SAS software. But is SAS runs on the
RISC SYSTEM on a regular ASCII terminal or on a X-window server,
then the DOS X-Windows will be able to use it too. While low memory
may limit you from using both AADU and XONDOS together, the products
both use the same Token Ring driver, and are designed to work
together. So you may have a combination of DOS machines with AADU,
XONDOS, or both.
Using the three programs (AADU, XONDOS, PC LAN) together, you should
be able to use the RISC SYSTEM as a DOS file and printer server for
the one DOS machine performing the PC LAN file service. To the
LAN server program, the AIX filesystem should look like another
DOS partition (such as drive E:). Then when the PC LAN program is
serving files to other DOS machine, the DOS partition E: should be
served to the PC LAN DOS machines as a regular DOS partition on the
PC LAN DOS server. This is what the announcement leads me to
believe is possible, however I do not have a working copy of the
three programs to confirm this. I will have to further research this
item to confirm is this is possible.
Further research is required to determine the limitations of a setup
using AADU, XONDOS, and PC LAN at the same time, and exactly how
the DOS AIX products coexists with the PC LAN program.
No further action is required on your part unless you have
additional questions or comments related to this item. This item
will remain open.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Coexistence between AADU and the PC LAN program means that they can
share the same LAN, but they can not interact with each other.
The only limitations are the ones given in announcement letter 291-038
for AADU and XonDOS Version 2.1.

QUESTION:
I am still confused. If I have a pc with 2MB of memory, can I run
all, none, either/or, of these programs at the same time in one PS/2?
Does AADU finaly use the IBM lan dirvers or its own?
thanks.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: The AADU and LAN support programs can be on the same PC, but they can
not use the adapter at same time. You can run the PC LAN program from
PCs on the physical network at the same time AADU and AIX is using
the network without a problem. The PC LAN machines can not communicate
with the AADU and AIX machines. The two environments are independent
of each other. AADU use it's own LAN drivers.
