ABSTRACT: PSM: What clients are supported by Printing Systems
Manager?

The Printing Systems Manager fact sheet says the PSM supports requests
from non-IBM systems such as SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, DEC, Ultrix, Apple
Macintosh and Windows, When I read the Overview documentation, I only
saw OS/2 and Windows clients listed. Are the others supported in
a "different" way? Also, does Windows include Windows95 and WindowsNT?
My customer wants to support many types of systems (AS/400, MVS, OS/2,
AIX, DEC, HP, DOS, Win95, WinNT, Sun on mostly Novell LANs) through PSM
attached printers and I'm trying to make sure I tell them exactly
what PSM can do today as far as supporting their clients.
A:
Anyone with access to TCP/IP LPR can route jobs to a printer controlled
by PSM. Some platforms will have PSM client code, and users on those
platforms will have a given set of functions they can perform. Other
platforms will not have PSM client code, but will be able to access
PSM-controlled printers through standard TCP/IP printing commands.
(References to heading titles and page numbers below are from the PSM
Overview document (G544-3962-00).)
In Release 1 of PSM, we provide client code for users on the following
platforms:
1) AIX client - We provide a POSIX-compliant command line interface that
allows the user to access the complete set of job and document
attributes that PSM provides. Both PSM and DCE client code on
the user's workstation are prereqs for this level of function.
("Supporting AIX Users with Advanced Printing Functions", page 13.)
2) OS/2 client - We currently provide a command line interface that
provides access to basic PSM function as described in "Supporting
OS/2 Users", page 13. PSM OS/2 client code is required on the OS/2
workstation; DCE is not.
3) Windows client - We currently provide a GUI interface for Windows
3.1.1 or higher or Windows for Workgroups 3.1.1 or higher. (There
is no client code in PSM Release 1 for Windows 95 or NT clients;
however, they can certainly access PSM printers through the Gateway
function I'll mention below.) PSM Windows 3.xx client code is
required on the Windows or WIN-OS/2 workstation; DCE is not. For a
list of functions, see "Supporting Windows Users", page 12.
4) Other users - Any user on the TCP/IP network that can submit print
requests through print commands such as lp, qprt, lpr, or enq can
route print to PSM controlled printers through the Gateway function
that runs on the PSM system. This Gateway maps lp/qprt/enq/lpr
commands and options to PSM commands and attributes. For a list of
supported functions, see "Supporting Users with Basic Printing
Function" (page 12). No PSM or DCE code is required on these
platforms.
These platforms could include any of those you listed, as long as
they have access to TCP/IP and LPR function. Novell users would
want to consider adding FLeX/IP or NFS Gateway NLMs to their print
servers for the TCP/IP access.
Note that we also offer the PSM Administrative GUI for AIX as an
optional feature.
That's the client support available today in PSM Release 1. I hope
that helps. If you have additional questions, please reopen this item.
