PSM Y2K testing

Q:
Topic thread:
Printer Systems (PRINT - NA/ATS)
Printing Systems Manager (PSM)
Client would like to validate a test plan for y2k for PSM. Please
comment on the following test plan:
1. Set the AIX system clock to 12/31/99. Let it run overnight and have
print running as the clock changes over to the new date.
2. Run a backup on 12/31/99 and restore on 1/1/00
3. Run a backup on 1/1/00 and restore on 1/2/00
Client would like to know if there are any dangers in doing this?
1. For instance after all the tests are done, can they reset the clock
to the present date with no impact?
2. Would the 2000 date affect their print output internally? For
instance the banner page will probably say 1/1/2000 but if the report
internally prints a date on the report, it should still be able to print
te current date (e.g. - 1/27/99) because that date was already "burned
in" from the system that it ran from, not the print server, comments?
Any other thoughts and comments would be appreciated, thanks.
A:
Well, I certainly wouldn't test this on a live production machine. I
also would make sure I back the system up before running these tests.
You want to take the time to "verify" the backup to ensure it is a
good one. I think you have some good tests outlined, and ones that I
want to experiment with myself.
I don't see a problem with doing the test then setting the date back
to normal. As for the banner page, I think you are correct that it
will just print the date coming from the apps (pc's or whatever) being
conventional, and I don't think it will have any impact.
I will be performing the same tests in the coming months. Maybe we
can compare notes.
Again, I would not test with a critical production machine, or test
with critical print jobs. That would be my main concern, in case you
do run into problems, it won't impact business.
Please let me know how the results come out.
