PSF/6000 CAPABILITIES.
ITEM: RTA000036995
QUESTION:
I have had several questions come up concerning PSF/6000 capabilities.
1) Many customer applications generate the PCL datastream directly from
the application. Is there a technical reason why PSF/6000 won't accept
PCL as an input datastream? Is this a known requirement?
2) Will the DITroff and PostScript transforms run on any other platform
besides AIX? It would be convenient if these transforms would run on
DOS and OS/2 in order to transform data before sending to the PSF/6000
server.
3) Some PostScript documents contain 300 pel images. How does PSF/6000
handle printing these images to a 240 pel printer - are they
automatically scaled?
4) How do we define a remote print queue to DOS? I have been told that
TCP/IP under DOS is not able to capture an LPT and route it to a remote
queue.
5) Can PSF/6000 accept a CCITT Group 4 TIFF image directly and print it
to a 3900 with AFIG? CCITT Group 4 is one of the compression algorithms
that AFIG supports, but does TIFF need to be converted to a page
segment before printing?
Thanks.

A:
1) Yes, the need for accepting PCL as input is an accepted requirement
and has been announced. We expect the code will be available by
1st or 2nd quarter 1995.
2) -DITROFF: As far as ditroff, there are no plans to port the
transform to OS/2 or DOS. Do they have an application that creates
ditroff on these platforms? If so, you may want to submit a REQUEST.
-POSTSCRIPT: There is a PostScript transform that will run on OS/2;
it is in PSF/2. You can save the output to a file for printing
through PSF/6000. There are no plans that I'm aware of to port the
PostScript transform to DOS. Again, if this is a significant
requirement, you should submit a formal REQUEST.
3) PostScript is inherently resolution independent. If you're talking
about images/bitmaps scanned in at 300 pel, then yes, PSF/2 handles
the scaling automatically.
4) TCP/IP for DOS 2.1 includes support for redirecting print destined
for a port out to a remote server using LPRRD and LPRRDSET. Please
see ASKQ items #CKFFN and CKCKD.
Additional information is in the DOS TCP/IP V2.1 User's Guide
(SC31-7045). Alternatively, you could consider the product AIX Access
for DOS Users (AADU), product number 5696-383. See item 8VRCW.
Don't forget that APRINT is now available for DOS users, although
from your description, that's not what they're looking for. Novell
CAPTURE is another option if they have a Novell LAN.
5) PSF/6000 does not accept TIFF directly.
At XPLOR '93 two weeks ago, we had a technology demonstration of
the Workbench that will allow you to view and print TIFF G4 images.
A statement of direction was made in announcement letter 293-672
that this capability would be available in Workbench in 1994.
Also, if you've not already reviewed it, please see ASKQ item
CLBNS/Q642248.
Also, you could use a TIFF-to-PostScript filter instead of going to
a page segment, and then print the file using the PostScript
transform. Again, I encourage you to submit a REQUEST regarding
TIFF as a natively supported data stream.
Thanks for using ASKQ.
