Question:
What new features are in NetView V5?
Answer:
UNIX Version Highlights:
*Tivoli's TME integration - Phase 1 of integration with TME 10
environment
- Installation uses TME 10 framework (previously AIX installed through
SMIT, now the install is the same for UNIX products, all at one time)
- Uses TME 10's RIM database for SQL database interface (now use the TME
10 Framework for all RDBMS processing)
*Support for Regional and Central NetViews
- UNIX versions can act as a Central NetView
- NT version can act stand-alone or as a Regional NetView, offloading
work from the Central NetView.
- Enhanced customer choice - customers
can use either a MLM or NetView NT in a large, distributed environment
- Note: When using NetView NT as a regional manager, a MLM must be
installed in same subnet. In 1Q98 (V5.1), customer will only need
NetView NT.
*Web client
- allows remote access to most NetView functions
- provides an easy to implement way to share information with operators
- acts as NetView site map
- provides access to major NetView functions
- displays topology maps and events
- allows switching between NetView servers
- displays browser identification string for diagnostics
- provides link to web server information
*Tivoli's TEC interface
- send NetView events to TEC console via integrated TEC adapter (no
longer limited to single class and slot mapping) - pass events through
NetView's event correlation and filtering engine before sending to TEC
*Collection Facility
- wildcarding (using regular expressions)
- per-collection registration for applications
- integration of collections throughout NetView Command Line Interface
- enhancements to collmap (application that draws collection submap)
*Event Subsystem
- ruleset collections interface
- multiple attributes by threshold
- new event attributes
*Netmon - (to discover network devices and network topology and to
monitor status, configuration, and topology changes)
- integration with the collection facility
- focused discovery: only discovery those devices you want in the
database. Limit by IP addresses, hostnames, and oid types
- configure discovered segment types and interface, segment and network
symbols
- reload seed file without stopping netmon
*MLM - Mid-Level Manager (to provide distributed network monitoring)
- configuration application for each Unix-based MLM platform
- analysis expressions in thresholding table
- threshold results table (with multiple results)
- Tivoli-based remote administration (same functionality as SMIT)
*Cross-platform support - AIX, Solaris, Digital Unix, NT (see below)
NT Version Highlights:
*Client/Server
*Regional NetView support
*DHCP support
*Discovery GUI
*Summary reports
*ODBC-based events subsystem
*SmartSets (same as UNIX object collections)
*Property Tips
*Submap sorting
*events/collected data in Object Properties
*device web integration
*status filter
*Intellimouse support
*NetView Perfmon extensions
*Submap printing
*Database import
*Bookmarks
*Limited discovery
*NT 4.0 support (only)
*Compound query Find
*Beginner/Advanced menus
*Scheduled discovery
*ODBC storage for SNMP data
*Increased trap throughput
*Filtered views of collected data
*New ring layout
*Bad OID/subnet mask logging
