LNM for AIX, 8229s & RING UTILIZATION
ITEM: RTA000053193
QUESTION:
I have a meeting with a customer tommorrow and need to address
collection of ring utilization from LNMAIX.
Please tell me if I am right.
1. The 8229 bridge (the only one) provides a token ring surrogate
function that will : Provide Ring Utilization for segments it is
attached to. It will also provide ring configuration as well.
2. The 8229 functions as Ring error Monitor.
3. If you have PC based LLC bridges, if you have an OS/2 system with
LSM installed and a shorty card, it will report ring utilization
back to LNMAIX even if LNMAIX is not on the same segment.
4. Do any of the above methods store this info in a database so reports
can be generated?

A: Here are the answers to your questions:
1. The 8229 bridge (in SNMP mode) provides REM, RPS, CRS to LNM for
AIX, but not ring utilization. This requires either LSM or an
8230 acting as a reporting agent. (Note: LSM only reports
directly to LNM for OS/2).
2. Yes, the 8229 functions as Ring Error Monitor.
3. LSM communicates to LNM for OS/2 V2 (either local or bridged).
LNM for OS/2 V2 forwards ring utilization to LNM for AIX.
Note: The newer models of the 8230 (3, 13, 213, 4) also report
ring utilization: to LNM for OS/2 in LLC flows, or LNM for AIX
thru SNMP agent).
4. The information is stored in files, not in a database, and there
is no report generation tool.
