Q: Question:
If a user is not using TCP/IP, how is DCE configured in an
SNA environment? ie, is the DCE cell name (and all the
environment variables required to install CICS/6000)
dependent on a TCP/IP host name (name with IP address in
/etc/hosts)?
We have a user who is only interested in connecting their
CICS/6000 to an SNA based mainframe. Does the CICS/6000
host(name) need to be the name of an SNA PU 2.1 in order to
connect the mainframe? This basically a question of
customizing the SNA profile for a CICS/6000 server. Do we
still need to put a dummy IP address in /etc/hosts for the
host name?

CICS/6000 requires DCE. To configure DCE you must have
TCP/IP installed and configured, and have either a Token
Ring, Ethernet, or X.25 adapter. Depending on the model of
your RISC SYSTEM/6000, you may have an integrated adapter
(see Sales Manual) and not have to buy one. DCE assigns
items UUIDs (Unique Universal IDentifier). To ensure a
unique UUID, DCE uses a combination of the hostname, TCP/IP
address, and hardware address burned into the adapter
board.
DCE is configured the same whether you are using SNA or not,
but you will additional environment variables and have to
start the Encina PPC Gateway for CICS/6000 to communication
over SNA.
The SNA Services LPP does not have a dependency on DCE.
There are sample SNA Services definitions in SC33-0815 AIX
CICS/6000 intercommunications.
When communicating with a mainframe CICS over SNA, the
CICS/6000 region name must match the name of the VTAM LU
that will be used to communicate with CICS/6000. In
SC33-0815 AIX CICS/6000 Intercommunication are diagrams
showing the items that must match between the two
environments (the CICS/6000 region name is not the only
consideration). Be sure to get the most current version of
the manual (there is already an -01 version
