X.3 PAD support on AIX PS/2 X.25 Licensed Program Product
ITEM: RTA000074654
Please verify the validity of this configuration:
__________
| PS/2 | one physical link /------ T
| AIX |-------------------- /// X.25 PSDN ///PAD ----- T
---------- \-----T
running multiple
AIX PS/2 X.25 LPP ASCII terminals
5601-202 (27F4254) logon to AIX
If this is a supported configuration, how many ASCII terminals can
be supported by one PS/2-80, WITH AND WITHOUT taking performance into
consideration. Also, can a RS/6000 take the place of the PS/2?
Unfortunately the RISC alternative in the configuration shown above is
not supported. The reason: lack of X.29 support to manage the X.3 PAD.
What is missing is something like the Integrated PAD function provided by
NPSI.
I thought so in the beginning, but I am not sure after reading the
announcement letter for the PS/2 AIX X.25 License Program (5601-202
or 27F4254), which is a separate product from PS/2 AIX. The
announcement says that the program will allow the PS/2 to connect to
an X.25 PSDN via the X.25 Co-processor card, and "ASCII terminals
attached through a PAD to an X.25 PSDN can send ASCII data to the
PS/2". Can you help us find the exact meaning of these words?
ANSWER
What you have said is correct. AIX/PS2 supports the PAD function. The
Risc/6000 does not. (The RT also does not provide this support.)
As far as no. of users supported; AIX/PS2 has a limit of 16 users. It
degrades in performance (depending on what it is doing, of course) after
about 7 or 8 users. The following picture shows the protocols.

If you desire this pad function for the RISC/6000, I would suggest
submitting an RPQ for it. (By pad function support I mean the X.29
portion in the above diagram. This is known as end-to-end pad functions.)
Third party programs can provide the X.29 support to the RISC/6000
