PORT 162 USER OF NetView/6000 V2
ITEM: RTA000079194
I have a question about socket port 162 user on NetView/6000 V2.
I investigated about pmd deamon and trapd deamon on following manual.
Programmer's Reference(SC31-7023-00)
Programmer's Guide(SC31-7022-00)
On PGM Reference, it describe following: The trapd listens on UDP port
162 for SNMP traps from agents.
but figure A-2 on PGM Guide, pmd deamon sends SNMP traps to trapd
deamon.
I am confused about these descriptions.
Q1. Which deamon is port 162 directly user ?
Q2. I would like to clarify about relationship between pmd and trapd.
ANSWER
In NetView for AIX V3 it is trapd that listens on port 162. However, I
believe that in V2 it was pmd that did so. I do not have a V2 system
available to confirm this, but you can confirm it by:
1. Stop all daemons (ovstop command)
2. Do netstat -a | grep snmp. You should not see anything listening
3. Start pmd (ovstart pmd command)
4. Check that trapd did not also start (ovstatus command).
5. Check using netstat -a again
The functions of the two daemons (in V3) are:
trapd handles SNMP traps, and passes them directly to other daemons
such as netmon, ovactiond
pmd handles both SNMP traps and CMIP notifies, it passes them to the
sieve interface (ovesmd) for use by other applications, such as nvevents,
tralertd...
