The Prerequisite of SNA Manager/6000
ITEM: RTA000070990
I'd like to know about AIX SNA Manager/6000.
(1) According to the announcement letter, it requires DCE Base Services
/6000. Could you give me a brief explanation why it needs DCE?
With whom does this DCE talk?
(2) The announcement letter refers to the requirement of any data
facility to download data from NetView to RISC/6000, such as
TCP/IP.
Even if we choose TCP/IP for that facility, do we still have to
have SNA Services/6000 which is also mentioned as S/W pre-
requisite?
ANSWER
Only part of DCE is used. There is a "Management of Subarea SNA
Networks from NetView/6000" foils presentation which will be available
after SNA/6000 announce which states:
SNA Manager/6000 code uses DCE Base Services for thread and
semaphore functionality. DCE Cell Server and Security Server
are not required.
AIX SNA Services is required for the SNA Services <-> (host) NetView
interactions (which, I assume go on continuously) and is not used
for file transfer of captured information. The file transfer subject
is separate from the ongoing interactions between (host) NetView and
SNA/6000; how/if the user DOES transfer files is a separate issue; that
is why the announcement says "such as TCP/IP". You could use any file
transfer approach.
