Assorted NV6K questions...
ITEM: RTA000064494
Some customer questions:
1. Having more than one operator using NV6K, how do I make clearing
events take effect for all operators?
2. Is there a possibility to get a list of all objects appearing in
the new objects holding area? Through an API? (To be used to keep
track of changes in the network.)
3. When comments are added to an object and the database is printed,
the comments are not printed. How come? Is there a way to fix it?
4. Is there a way to add an object representing eg. a process in
an agent system to nv6k and make traps about that process update
the "process object's" status, without programming your own
application (provided the traps arrive to nv6k from an agent
somewhere)?
ANSWER
1. Development responds:
The product is not designed to perform a global
clearing of events across operators. The global under clear
selects only applies to a single operator. If the operator has
multiple events windows open it will clear events from all of
that operators events window only. Each operator has their
own nvevents process, even if the same user id is used.
2. ITSO's answer:
We don't know of any API or approach to get at the holding area;
however, you certainly can use event configuration to notify
you of events (such as node added, etc.; see the list of AIX
NetView/6000 events).
Development came back with:
The best solution is to code to snmp api and
register for the node add traps.
ITSO's comment: We use event configuration
and node-add; but, there may be a performance implication for
busy systems.
3. Development responds:
The comment box is not a field in the object database.
The comment box is designed to be unique per map. If the
customer want the same comments to appear on all map, they need
to write (code) a dialog that will add a field to the object
database.
4. ITSO's answer:
No -- you will have to get involved somehow with user coding to
affect the status/representation of any symbol other than IP or
a supported product (such as AIX SNA Mgr/6000, AIX LNM/6000, etc.)
This user-coding is made quite straight-forward via sample API
examples (such as our World Trade examples in the API redbook:
GG24-4059) or via examples in GG24-4327. Also, if you want to
"only" use traps to affect something (triggered-traps, in some
way.....) you might be able to use gtmd -- but, this would still
be user-coding (I would use the APIs as in the redbook).
Development had no additional comment.
