Printers with built in Ethernet Adapters.
ITEM: RTA000071218
I have been asked how to set up AIX to print directly to a printer on
the network, that has a built in Ethernet Adapter. My only experience
so far is with using a 4033. Can we print direct to the printer, and
is it documented?
ANSWER
There are a couple of scenarios that you may be describing.
Since this problem is configuration dependent, we may require
additional information to answer your question.
o What kind of printer is being used here?
o What type of ethernet connection is being used?
o What level of AIX is being used?
If the ethernet adapter being used is a HP JetDirect card, then
you can use this printer with AIX 3.2.5. In AIX 3.2.5 there is a
virtual printer selection for the JetDirect card in SMIT. Type
"smit virprt" to access this screen.
If you are using the IBM LaserPrinter 4039 with a built in
network adapter, then the printer would come with software which
needs to be loaded on to the RISC System/6000. This will add a
selection to the virtual printer screen for the 4039.
All other ethernet adapters are unsupported and require socket
programming. This programming will open the connection, send the
print job, and then close the connection. The socket's API
(application program interface) provides this functionality.
You may wish to contact the AIX Systems Center by sending a
note to AIXSERVE at DALVM41B for possible assistance in coding
this application for a fee.
