MCA Development KIT
ITEM: RTA000071077
My customer designs cards to be implemented in a bus like VME ... He has
an RS/6000 and wants to design new cards for MCA Bus.
He asked me if we have an MCA development kit which can help him for
the design of these cards (like Simulators, ...). Do you know if we
have this kind of product or if these products exist in other
companies.
Thank you.
ANSWER
I have found that there is a "Micro Channel Developers Association"
which can be reached at 916-222-2262 or 800-438-6232 (USA). Or,
you may write them at the following address:
MCDA
2280 N. Bechelli Ln.
Suite B
Redding, CA 96002
I understand that they have published literature which would assist
in MCA development.
Other than this organization, there are not any public domain tools
(simulations or test cases) to assist in microchannel adapter
development.
However, it is possible that your customer could use IBM Boca Raton
Technical Services on a contractual basis to perform verification
testing on the newly developed adapters. This would probably be
done on a contractual basis to allow IBM to sell testing services
externally.
You may wish to contact someone from the BRTS Marketing Operations
group in Boca Raton, FL. for additional information on contracting
these technical services through IBM.
Also, there are some references on RISC System/6000 architecture
that may be of assistance in developing microchannel adapters:
o InfoExplorer -- by doing a compound search under "Micro
Channel technical"
o "Hardware Technical Reference Micro Channel Architecture"
(SA23-2647).
o "Hardware Technical Reference General Information"
(SA23-2643-01), chapter 10.
Note: The MCA bus used on the RISC System/6000 and the MCA bus
on the PS/2 are not exactly the same.
For information on these differences, please refer to the
"Hardware Technical Reference General Information"
(SA23-2643-01) chapter 10, and to the "Personal System/2
Hardware Interface Technical Reference - Architectures"
(S84F-9808).
Also, various models of the RISC System/6000 have optional
features for the MCA bus. For a description of the
optional features, please refer to the technical reference
manual of the specific RISC System/6000 model. You can
also refer to the "Hardware Technical Reference General
Information" manual on pages 10-7 and 10-8.
Your customer may also be interested in the "Writing a Device
Driver for AIX Version 3.2" (GG24-3629).
Thank you.
