Ipl with external disk connected through SCSI-2 FW #2416

ITEM: RTA000065345

My customer has a 7011-250 diskless, a 9334-501 connected with
a SCSI-2 FW differential controler (#2416)(3x1Go in it).
In PLET, I see : IPL capability with this controller is available
on 7011-250.
We can't IPL.
What's the problem ? Is it possible to IPL if I connect the 9334-501
to the 7011-250 via a SCSI-2 controller #2420 ?

ANSWER
You are correct, IPL capability with the SCSI-2 Fast/Wide DE
adapters, feature 2416 is supported on the 250. The 9334-501
can be attached and should be able to boot from either the 2416
  or 2420 adapters.

From the information provided, it is not clear what the exact
situation is. However, I will provide some general things to
check which may be part of the problem:

  1. Consider what type of system the 9334-501 came from, and
what level of AIX is installed on the disk. This is important
because when you move rootvg between different machine types
with different hardware, you may have inconsistancies in the
ODM, which will not be resolved with just moving the rootvg
disk between systems. The best process to resolve such
inconsistancies when moving rootvg between different machine
types would be to reinstall onto the new machine with a mksysb.
You should of course check that the AIX version is compatible
with all hardware on the new machine, and that all necessary
PTFs are installed for the new hardware.

  2. Was the 9334-501 originally attached to the 2416 Fast/Wide
adapter on the previous system? If it was not, you may
be missing some PTFs for the Fast/Wide adapter on your
rootvg. The PTFs available for the Fast/Wide adapters
      are listed below:
o U429283 Diagnostics enhancement for new models and adapters
      o U429285 SCSI-2 Fast/Wide, Differential Fast/Wide enhancement
      o U429287 HANFS enhancements for SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A

  3. Also, if you were not previously attached to the 2416 on the
original system, then the SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter bus width
will not be set. The Fast/Wide adapter is capable of 8- and
16-bit bus transfers. The bus width must be set in SMIT for
the SCSI Fast/Wide adapter if you are using an 8-bit cabling.
The 9334-501 is an 8-bit device so you will need to set SMIT's
"Wide Bus Enabled" field to "no" for the Fast/Wide SCSI
      adapter.

  4. Does the current bootlist setting on the 250 permit IPL in
your environment? If not, you can login to the diskless
      250 and issue the following:

bootlist -m prevboot -i to invalidate the previous bootlist
bootlist -m normal scdisk to allow booting from any disk with
                                 boot record
