About HACMP & HANFS disk configuration.
ITEM: RTA000069469
My question is one of HACMP & HANFS disk configuration.
I had known that 2.4GB drive as SCSI-2 with 9334-500 is not supported.
But I had thought that 2.4GB drive as SCSI-1 is supported with HACMP &
HANFS. However, information in the HA forum says the following:
"The 2.4GB drives are supported with SCSI-1 adapter
(just not ever with HACMP)"
"SCSI-2 disks are not supported with HACMP(or HANFS)"
Is 2.4GB drive as SCSI-1 supported with HACMP & HANFS?
If not , please tell me a reason.
ANSWER
First, it must be understood that the 2.4GB disk drive is a SCSI-2 SE
disk drive. Attaching it to a SCSI-1 adapter does not make it a SCSI-1
drive. The definition of whether a drive is SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 comes from
what SCSI commands it supports, not by what speed it can transfer at or
what adapter it is connected to.
As for support for the 2.4GB drive as a shared disk by HACMP or HANFS,
the answer is that it is not supported by either product. This was
announced as follows:
1. For HACMP:
The announcement letter for HACMP Version 1.2 states "HACMP/6000 does
not support SCSI-2 adapters or SCSI-2 disks as the shared disk sub-
system." (this includes the 2.4GB drive)
2. For HANFS:
The announcement letter for AIX 3.2.4 states "The following are not
supported for an HANFS configuration:
- 9334-500 Expansion Unit with:
- ...various disks...
- 2.4GB disk drive, feature #2590, #2593
- All future IBM SCSI SE drives
The reason is that the voltage and signal characteristics of SCSI-SE
are not as reliable as SCSI-DE drives, which have now been announced. By
withdrawing the SCSI Passthrough Cables and making these statements, IBM
is trying to ensure that all future installations of these products will
use SCSI-DE components for their shared SCSI disk requirements.
