If the SCSI/(9333 adapter) is damaged on RISC 1, what will happen?
Will the system continue to run and HACMP/6000 will display message or
what?
ANSWER
First of all, since the 9333 adapter is not a SCSI adapter, but rather a
serial adapter, I assume that you are asking also whether it works the
same way. The answer to your question is that with HACMP as it is
delivered ("out of the box"), that configuration would present a single
point of failure for the cluster in the SCSI adapter. Specifically, if
the adapter failed, HACMP would do nothing, and the users on the server
with the failed adapter would no longer have access to the disks.
This failure can be handled through a feature of HACMP 1.2 called
"Error Notification". This feature allows you to have HACMP react to any
event in the AIX error log, and carry out the action that you define. In
this case, you would define an "error notification method" through SMIT
on your servers to react to a SCSI adapter hw failure by halting the
system and creating a "node failure", moving all resources to the other
server. The Error Notification facility is described in Chapter 9 of the
HACMP Administration Guide (SC23-2510-0).
Please note that even if you did cover the failure of the adapters, this
configuration would leave you with a single point of failure in the SCSI
cable (assuming the disks are all standalone with separate power supplies
). To avoid a single point of failure in the cable, the user would have
to add a second disk string, and mirror across the strings. The same
holds true for both 9333 and SCSI disks.
