What is /usr/preserve used for ?
This customer found many large files in this dir and since he requires
more free disk space, can he remove all the files from this dir ?
ANSWER
The /usr/preserve directory saves abnormally terminated vi sessions.
Also, whenever you are editing a file and the system goes down, AIX
keeps a copy of the file in the /usr/preserve directory. If a user
wants to recover the file, he can type 'vi -r . If he does
not remember the , he can just type 'vi -r' and it will
respond with the filename he was editing when the system went down.
If you type 'ls -l' in the /usr/preserve directory, you will see a
copy of the file in an encoded format. You can identify the file by
the date and the owner of the file. Please note that only the owner
of the recovered file can recover it.
