Queue down when printer turned off
ITEM: RTA000070937
Is it possible to change the configuration of a print queue
(with backend program, I guess) in such a way that the queue
will not go down when the printer is turned off and a job is
issued to the queue?
ANSWER
In AIX version 3.2.3, the queue would not go down in these
circumstances. However, at AIX 3.2.3 there is an inherent problem
which caused the qdaemon to hang. To fix this and other problems,
in AIX 3.2.3E IBM changed the printing subsystem so that the
printer would go DOWN when system detected that the printer lost
CD (Carrier Detect) and a print job was issued.
Currently, there is no method through software that can be used to
keep the printer from going DOWN when the printer is turned off and
a job is issued. However, you could wire async cables such that
CD and CTS were always high. But, in doing this, you would be
setting yourself up for other problems such as lost data. Thus,
this type of async cabling wiring is not supported or recommended
by IBM.
