Info on Prestoserve (IBM 0562 Mod. 004) please
ITEM: RTA000069887
1. Will more than one Prestoserve cards work in a 7015 mod. 990 (we
think of 4 cards)?
2. If more than one card is supported, will we see a linear performance
improvement?
3. Do we have to make special setups to "assign" groups of disks to
dedicated Prestoserv adapters (we speek of 90 9333 disks)?
4. Where can we get detailed technical information about this product?
5. Do you know of any reference-installations with *more* than one
Prestoserve?
ANSWER
I will answer your questions in the order they were asked:
1) Will more than one Prestoserve cards work in the Model 990?
R) Unfortunately you can only place one Prestoserve card per machine.
This is not limited to the Model 990 but to all RISC System/6000s.
2) If more than one card, will we see a linear performance improvment?
R) Since moer than one card is not supported this is a moot issue.
3) Do we have to make special setups to assign groups of disks
to dedicated Prestosserve adapters?
R) Prestoserve will only improve the performance of Sequential
writes to a system. These writes are normally the product of
an NFS mounted filesystem or a large database engine that uses
sequential reads and writes. Also jfslogs utilize sequential
writes. After installing the Presetoserve Software, then the
hardware, followed by the Prestoserve configuration, you will
tell Prestoserve which filesystems to affect. You do not need
to change the grouping to setup of the hdisks on the RISC System
for use with Prestoserve. Again, since only one adapter is
supported in a RISC System, you would be best to choose the
NFS or database filesystems with the most use for Prestoserve
to accelerate.
4) Where do we get detailed technical information about this product?
R) Since this is a Third Party product there is no general place to
obtain technical data from IBM. However you may wish to contact
Legato at US Phone# Area Code: 415 812-6017 and request the
information you need. I do however do have some documentation
from Legato and could answer any questions you my have concerning
the product.
5) Do you know of any multi-Prestoserve installation instructions?
R) Again, since multiple Prestoserve Adapters are not supported,
this is a moot issue.
ANSWER
R: Since all of your data will be contained within one filesystem then
the Prestoserve card would be configured to "Prestorize" the entire
300gb filesystem. The Prestoserve card is designed to speed up
sequential reads and writes which are most generally associated with
NFS mounted filesystems.
Prestoserves greatest strength come when it's used with heavily
accessed filesystem utilizing sequential Writes. If the filesystem
is being written to heavily, Prestoserve states you can achieve
100% improvement in through put and 50% improvement in response time
since all writing activities are being handled at memory speed
rather than at slow disk speeds. If the Prestoserve card is to
be used in a mostly read-only environment, the Prestoserve card
will help improve performance but not near the order of magnitude
as in the writing environment.
If you bid is for a system that with utilize the 300gb filesystem
through NFS and the filesystem is to be written to as well as read
from, then I feel the Prestoserve product would significantly
improve the systems performance. If the system is to be primarily
a read-only environment, I feel the Prestoserve card will not be
able to offer substantial performance benefits.
Thank You.
