NIS: automounter - variable substitution in the auto.master?

Question:

Can variable substitutions can be done in auto.master (master map)
of nis?

        Example...  he has this:

        direct maps  /- auto direct $vendor

        And would like for it to substitute either ibm or sgi for
        the vendor depending on the type of machine.

        His master is 3.2.5 w/ aix and sgi clients.

RESPONSE:

This was tested on both an AIX system and a SUN @ 4.1.3 and it
appears this is not a supported function and that NIS is working
as designed.  The test used follows:

in the /tmp/auto.test file:
/- /tmp/${VENDOR}.direct

in the /tmp/aix.direct file:
/tmp/mnt servername:/tmp

automount invocation:
automount -DVENDOR=aix -f /tmp/auto.test
