When he selects add virtual, it should give a list of

4 Network Printer (Hewlett-Packard JetDirect)
Enter number from list above (press Enter to terminate): ->
These options are not appearing on his system. Is he
missing code or is there a reason for this?
Response:
The selection items for 'mkvirprt' come form a series of files
in the /usr/lib/lpd/pio/etc directory with a file extension
of '.config'. If these files are missing, then the stuff
will not show up. ena.config and ina.config are both programs
that show up only if the user has installed the LexMark drivers
for 4033 or the 4039 Internal network card. jetdirect.config
is only available at 3.2.5. ascii.config is for terminal
attached printing. If the user has the xstation manager software
installed, he will also have xsta.config. If you get a 3930 printer
from pennant, there is also a pennant.config option. Each of these
is a script that determines what gets done when each option is
selected. Watch out for links to files that do not exist. This
can cause the 'mkvirprt' to hang or give error messages.
ls -l *.config shows on my system:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root printq 697 Aug 18 1992 ascii.config
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 23 Mar 6 1994 ena.config -> /usr/lpp/lap
/ena.config
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 23 Mar 6 1994 ina.config -> /usr/lpp/lap
/ina.config
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root printq 2794 Jul 18 1993 jetdirect.config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root system 2782 Oct 13 17:59 pennant.config
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root printq 1905 Dec 16 1993 xsta.config
