Telnet login refused periodically - cause: Duplicate IP address

Question:

AIX 3.2.5 Model C10

When I try to telnet to my C10 from another RISC or a PC, I am
sometimes successful, but not always. Sometimes I get a message that
the connection is refused. I am able to ping all machines.

Response:

A: Customer is having intermittant problems telneting over his
twisted pair ethernet to his 3.2.5 C10 machine.
Randomly, it seems, telnets to the C10 result in a connection
refused. Sometimes trying again immediately will connect,
although not always. If the telnet doesn't make it on the
second try then it never does. Other work arounds include
telnet'ing to a different RS, quitting, and then telnet'ing
to the C10. No other RS's ( all at 3.2.3 ) are having this
problem; they are plugged into the same hub.

Looking at the software setup for the C10's ethernet interface
en0 shows that it is up and in the working state. inetd is
running and inetd.conf is ok. Attempted to remove and restore
the interface to see if that would clear up the problem.

Response:

Customer called back; Removing and readding the interface
didn't help, but further investigation revealed a duplicate
ip address on the network that was causing the intermittant
connection failures. Customer has corrected the situation
and the problem has not surfaced since.
