Questions about mirroring

Question:

AIX 3.2.5

I have twelve 2GB hard drives on my system, six of which are mirrors.
We will be purchasing four more 2GB hard drives and wish to mirror
them. The documentation I have from my vendor states that when adding
new hard drives to a mirrored system you are required to re-install the
operating system. Is this true?

I am planning on making a new VG with the 2 new disks I am adding.

Response:

You should not have to re-install AIX.

If all of your drives were in rootvg, and you were going to ADD these
drives to rootvg, then you might need to re-install in order to
accomplish this. ROOTVG is made with minimum descriptor space(VGDA)
and you can easily run out of descriptor space if you add extra drives.
The only way around that problem is to re-install the system using all
the drives you plan to have in rootvg. Since this is not the case for
you, all you need to do is add the drives to the system, make a VG with
them, add the filesystems, and mirror them.
