Tcp/ip- Problems configuring tcpip.

Response:

Env:4.3.2, S70, 4ea 10/100MB PCI Ethernet cards
Cust:Jay Panaikal
Problem: Customer is trying to verify operation of all of the Ethernet
cards in this machine. He has sucessfully configured ent0/en0
interface and can ping his gateway using it. When he tries to
down/detach en0 and then configure one of the other three cards/
interfaces, he claims that these other cards will INTERMITTENTLY
be unable to ping the default gateway.
Action:I had customer run some commands to verify what was installed in
the machines. It showed 4ea of the (22100020) PCI Ethernet cards
At the time, ent0/en0 was configured and he could ping the gate-
way with no problems. I had him run ifconfig en0 donw/detach,
then rmdev -l en0. He then went into smitty tcpip, Min.Config,
and configured ent2/en2 with the same name and IP address.
From the command line, a ping \, would
hang indefinitely. If he ran 'arp -an', it returned 'incomplete'
We tried to delete the entry with 'arp -d \' and
tried running another ping, but still did not work. We even
tried to down/detach en2 and reconfigured it with it's own
IP address, still had same problem.

According to Jay, here is how the 4 Ethernet cards are slotted:
We used 'lsdev -Ccadapter' to list:
        ent0 20-60
        ent1 20-70
        ent2 30-58
        ent3 40-58

He claimed that it was slotted this way:
                slot 2 ent0
        slot 4 ent1
        slot 9 ent2
        slot 11 ent3

After checking with someone with a slotting guide, Tamera,
who I had conferenced in, stated that the slot for ent2/en2
should have been slot 11, and ent3/en3 should be slot 9, which
is actually reversed from what customer thinks. We had him swap
the two cables between slots 9 and 11 and now he can ping the
        router with the en2 i/f.

Obviously, the physical slots on an S70 are not in a up/down
order as the customer might have expected and knowledge of the
slots and their order helped solve this problem.

Action plan: closing call per customer's approval.
