How to move a Logical Volume accross volume groups.

Question:

I have a Logical Volume (LV) called orap in rootvg that I want to
move to the volume group datavg. How do I move this LV?

Response:

You have 144 FREE PPs (Physical Partions) in datavg and orap has only
55 PPs, so there is plenty of room for orap in datavg. You could do
this through SMIT, but when going across volume groups, it's best to
back your data up on tape, create the new logical volume on the volume
group that you are wishing to go to, create a filesystem on that
logical volume, tar the data to the new filesystem, and remove the old
logical volume from rootvg. This will ensure the safety of the
filesystem control block.

Note that if you create the new LV and filesystem (FS) first, you will need
to use different names until you delete the old LV and FS. After deleting
the old LV and FS, you can then rename the new ones back to the original
names. This is a conservative way of moving one filesystem to another
volume group.
