Getting extra characters using HCON after telnet

Question:

I have SNA and HCON running on my RISC/6000.  If I telnet or remote
login from another machine to the RISC and invoke HCON, I sometimes get extra
characters when I press a key.  These characters seem like
the escape sequences for the key which is pressed.  The terminals
connected to the RISC with HCON have no problems.

Response:

Set an ESCDELAY variable in the .profile for the user which
logs into the RISC with HCON running.  You can do this by
adding the following to the users .profile:

 ESCDELAY=number
 export ESCDELAY

Try 5000 for 'number' first.  If this does not help, you can increase
as high as 9999.  You can adjust 'number' to whatever is best for
your network.
