problems creating mksysb with exabyte 10e tape carousel
Question:
AIX 3.2.3 Have added new 8mm Exabyte 10e tape carousel. When
attempting to create a mksysb receive the following error:
0512-0017 cannot write to the device /dev/rmt1.1
Either write protected or in use. Does not appear that
the carousel is even loading the first tape.
Response:
The Exabyte 10e doesn't load the tape automatically. The customer
must do this by using the operator controls on the front of the
autoloader. An alternative is to write a program to send the
appropriate commands to the autoloader to load the appropriate tape.
The autoloader has 2 SCSI IDs, one for the tape drive and one for
the robot arm that loads the tapes.
Alternatively, they can purchase a program that takes advantage of
the autoloader. Three choices are ADSM, Sysback/6000 or Legatto
Networker. He is installing Legatto.
Doing a mksysb may require that he use the operator panel on the
Exabyte to unload the first tape (when and if it becomes full)
and then to load the second tape. He will be prompted at the AIX
terminal to press enter after he has done this.
To add the jukebox with Legatto, understand that Legatto
calls the tape drive a CTS (Cartridge Tape System) and the
robot arm the CHS (Cartridge Handling System). On the Exabyte
front panel the SCSI ids are set to 0 for the CHS and to 1
for the CTS.
lsdev -Cc tape returns:
rmt1 00-06-00-10 Other SCSI Tape drive (the Exabyte)
lscfg | grep 00-06 returns:
scsi2 00-06 SCSI - IO controller
rmt1 00-06-00-10
psc0 00-06-00-61 System Object
He needs 00 instead of 61 for the psc0 (the robot arm).
lsdev -C | grep psc
psc0 Available 00-06-00-61 Legato Systems Autochange Device 4.0.2
We turned off the Exabyte.
cfgmgr
lsdev -Cc tape and lsdev -C | grep psc
But rmt1 and psc0 is still available. Thus cfgmgr doesn't communicate
with the Exabyte.
So we removed the jukebox via smit, and then added it back with smit.
We used scsi address 00. This solved the problem. He used a
Legatto program to verify that it worked.
