Configuring tty or lp device showing "defined".

Question:

When trying to configure a tty or lp device, they come up defined and
not available. I have a 128 port concentrator and two 16 port
adapters.

Response:

What level of AIX are you running? You can run the following commands
to determine this:

lslpp -m bos.obj 3.2.4 and up
lslpp -h|grep U411711 3.2.3e
lslpp -h|grep U409490 3.2.3 base
lslpp -h|grep U403173 3.2.2

You are running AIX 3.2.3e

Response:

You have removed your tty definition and added an lp definition, the
lp comes up as defined. I have asked you to run ' diag -a '. This
comes up clean.

Your RANs come as a available. Only your printer devices off the 128
port come up as being defined. I have asked you run some diag tests on
the 128 port adaptor. Also, check if there are any errors in the 128
port itself.

Response:

Find out if you have the following PTFs installed in your system:

        U418626 U419162

You do not. Will order these PTFs.

These have been superseeded by the following PTF

        U424402

Response:

You are getting lexical errors when trying to install these PTFs.

0503-211 installp: A lexical error occurred for U4282228
            on line 02, column 23
An unexpected character, space was found (hexadecimal value 28).

You also received another error on this PTF with an 'illegal number'
to one of the PTFs.

I asked you to find the following PTFs

 U418283 U422467 U417395 U416878 U416450 U414603 U414085
 U413921 U413425

You need the following PTF for the lexical errors:

          U422467

First install this PTF, then install the U428228 into your system, and
finally install the U424402 into your system. Done in this order, the
PTF should be applied and you should not encounter the lexical errors.

Now, the actual fix should fix your problem encountered with the
printers coming up as defined.

When applying these PTFs, after the U428228 has been installed, you
should apply the last PTF as a subsystem.

The fixes have worked, and seems to be fine.

Q: For a 3.2.4 version with the same symptons, should I use the above
patches?

A: If you get lexical errors when installing U424402, install from a
3.2.5 tape the U422467, then the U428228, and finally the U424402.
