No Xwindows when not logged in as root
Question:
I have a RS/6000 370 running AIX 3.2.5. This is a new system
and installation. I cannot get Xwindows to run when I use the xinit
command. It will work as root but not if I am any other user. I
receive these errors:
Binding Unix Socket already in use
1356-822: creating tcp Socket.
1356-805: Xinit giving up.
Response:
Try startx. Nothing would happen, the prompt would come back.
Need to verify PATH and DISPLAY variables. Will also check
.xinitrc and .mwmrc files.
The DISPLAY variable was :0.0 which is correct. .xinitrc was correct.
correct. Licensing for users was correct. He is utilizing an HFT. The 370 is
on a network via ethernet and none of the other RS/6000 are experiencing problems.
It would seem to be a permission problem. But permissions on .xinitrc and for
the user seemed correct.
Create a local user to test the Xwindows. The user, he was testing with,
was produced on Yellow pages. Do a cold re-boot. Then try to bring up Xwindows.
Still not producing the Xwindows. Had him check the next file systems:
The permissions of the /tmp filesystem are 777 which is correct:
drwxrwxrwt 5 bin bin 1024 Oct 19 16:54 tmp
Needed to change the permissions of the following file to 777 it was at 755:
drwxrwxrwx 2 root system 512 Oct 19 16:48 .X11-unix
This resolved the problem for both the local user and the network user!
