Thinks hdisk is going bad.

Question:

I am running AIX v 3.2.5. I have a raw logical volume which is
used by Sybase for database storage. I could not access the database.
I checked in the error report using errpt -a and could not find an
error related to this hdisk. We tried to run lspv -l hdisk1 and this
return the error:

0516-307 ... unable to access device configuration database.

Response:

You have 3 disks in the machine and all are in their own Volume Groups.
When ever you try to run an LVM type command (lsvg, lslv, etc) that
accesses the ODM, it comes back with:

   "Cannot access device configuration database"

I checked to make sure that the /etc/objrepos files were there and in
good order. They were. I then had you run "lsdev -Cc disk" to verify
that the disk were there and available. They were.

I then had you check the size of the filesystems. / was 100% full. I
had you go through and remove the files that were not necessary ( we
removed the smit.log and smit.script files) and then the LVM commands
worked just fine.

When ever you run some LVM commands or run them with certain flags,
they need to put a lock in the database. Since there is not room in
the / filesystem, it fails with this error. Freeing up room will fix
this. Afterward, you were able to have your system up and running as
before.
