Questions on setting up RAW LV
Question:
I have a system running 3.2.5. I am installing Sybase on this system.
I am going to be using a RAW Logical Volume (LV) for the database.
I am a little confused how I am supposed to do this. Can you help me?
Response:
All you need to do is to create a LV in SMIT that is the size you
want. Keep in mind that you will still have a 2gig addressibility
limit for the LV. When you create this, a device entry for the LV name
will be made in /dev. There will be a LV name and a rLV name entry.
They both access the same LV, but the way the device is accessed and
buffered is different. Sybase will likely just use the name of the LV
you created with the full path, (ie, /dev/\).
The only thing you should need to consider after this point is that
you must not overwrite the first 512 bytes of the LV. The Logical
Volume Control Block is stored here. If this is overwritten, you can
have problems in the future. You can specify that this is not
overwritten by having an offset into the Sybase database you create.
The manuals on your database should cover this.
